Terminal 3: the Region’s Future Cal
When completed, the new Terminal 3 (T3) in the southern part of Frankfurt Airport will join Runway Northwest, inau- gurated in 2011, as one of the major milestones of the air- port’s expansion. It is being built in two phases, beginning with the main terminal building and two piers. To consoli- date and strengthen Frankfurt Airport’s position as an inter- national aviation hub, it is essential to adjust the terminal facilities’ overall capacity to meet growing demand. The focus is on enhancing passenger convenience and comfort in the terminals, chiefly by adding adjacent aircraft parking positions – above all for wide-body aircraft.
• The annual passenger volume at Frankfurt Airport is pre- dicted to increase to between 68 and 73 million in the year 2021.
• Between them, Terminals 1 and 2 have a maximum handling capacity of around 64 million passengers a year. If this limit is exceeded, the quality of service will decline, greatly in some cases.
